Everything You Need to Know About Cowhide Leather

Pet animal skins and furs have been employed by humans for years and years, since at least 3000BC, where pet animal materials were frequently used for warmth and shelter. Nowadays, leather products have become increasingly popular because of their adaptability and long-standing aspect. The modern appeal for leather is due to its ornamental elements, whether for furniture or attire. Cowhide is the most well-known dog skin product which is the optimum choice for mats (cowhide area rugs) and upholstery, such as butterfly chairs. Cowhide leather is durable, smooth and easy to care for.

Great things about Cowhide Leather
Cowhide is one of the thickest types of leather, which makes up about its durability and strength. Unlike most variations of leather, cowhide is waterproof, doesn’t rip or tear easily, and is also resilient to cracking. Additionally, cowhide is also:

Naturally hypoallergenic
Breathable
Flexible
Comfortable to wear
Resistant to sunshine and temperature damage
And, it can last five times so long as fabric!
How is Cowhide Leather Made?

Contrary to public opinion, the cowhide processing process is humane. Cowhides are a by-product of the beef and dairy industry, meaning no cows are killed specifically for their hides. Izel Design’s cowhide rugs are sourced from ethical, unbiased wholesalers in South America, who gather the hides directly from slaughterhouses.

The Processing Process
After the cow’s pores and skin has been collected, it is ‘fleshed’ to eliminate all the surplus extra fat, muscle and flesh which is attached to your skin. The cover is then salted to remove bacterias, protect it from moult and maintain it. After being cured with salt, the skin is washed and stretched chiseled to dry.

Once free of moisture, the cowhide can be tanned. ‘Tanning’ refers to the procedure of treating the pet skin to carefully turn it into tender and durable leather. The ‘locks on hiding’ method is typically used for the creation of area rugs, and if colour reduction occurs, the cover is treated with fatty acids and dyes to revert it back again to its original colouring and routine. Although cowhides can have a unique leather smell, they don’t contain chemicals, fumes or remnants of the tanning process once sold.

Entirely Unique Cowhides
Cow Leather Hide

Authentic cowhides showcase the natural colors, markings, features, shapes and textures of the cows they originated from. Because every cow has its distinctive pattern, no two hides will ever before truly be the same. This presents an excellent chance to own a one-of-a-kind unique product.

Cowhides may also be treated with different surface finishes, such as metallic silver, to make a more modern charm which retains the initial markings.
